Hong Kong student visa guide (2026–27)
Non-local students on full-time programmes need a student visa or entry permit from the Immigration Department (ImmD) before travelling. Your institution sponsors the application. Allow 6–8 weeks, travel only once it is approved, and register for an HKID within 30 days of arrival if you will stay more than 180 days.
Who is this for
Anyone who is not a Hong Kong resident joining a full-time course: undergraduates, postgraduates and exchange students.
| Step | Who does it | Typical time |

Step by step
- 1Accept your offer and follow your institution's visa instructions. It acts as your sponsor.
- 2Prepare your passport (valid for the whole stay if possible), photo, academic and financial documents.
- 3Submit the forms your institution sends, with the documents it asks for. Answer ImmD requests quickly.
- 4When approved, download or print your e-Visa / entry permit and keep it with your passport.
- 5Enter Hong Kong with the visa. Do not enter as a visitor and try to switch.
- 6Book your HKID appointment in week one if your stay is longer than 180 days.
Travelling before approval, letting your passport expire mid-programme, or taking work outside what your No Objection Letter allows.
ImmD charges a visa fee; your institution may add an administration fee. Check the current ImmD fee table.

Frequently asked questions
Can I work on a student visa?
Full-time non-local students on degree programmes of at least one year are currently exempt from part-time work restrictions under a temporary arrangement. Exchange students are not. Check your NOL and ImmD before accepting a job.
Do exchange students need an HKID?
Usually not if your stay is 180 days or less. If you will stay longer, you must register within 30 days.
What if I change programme or university?
Your visa is tied to your institution and programme. A change needs a new application, not an amendment.
Can I stay after graduating?
Graduates of full-time locally accredited programmes can apply for IANG, which normally allows 24 months to stay and work.
