Hong Kong student budget: monthly cost of living (2026–27)

Short answer

A careful student in a university hall can live on about HK$5,000–7,000 a month. In a shared private flat expect HK$9,000–14,000, and HK$15,000+ in a studio. On top of that, keep one-time arrival costs (often HK$15,000–40,000 if you rent privately) and an emergency reserve of about three months' spending.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hong Kong expensive for students?

Rent is high, but food and transport can be cheap. Halls and shared flats keep it manageable.

How much cash should I bring?

HK$1,000–2,000 for the first days; use cards and Octopus after that.

Can part-time work cover living costs?

It can help. Full-time degree students may currently work part-time without an hours cap, but do not plan your visa finances around it.

Do I pay tax on part-time income?

Most students earn below the basic allowance and pay no salaries tax, but you may still receive a tax return to file.
