Welcome & Overview
What you are walking into, in numbers and in feeling.

Hong Kong is roughly 1,110 km² of subtropical hillside, 7.5 million people, and eight publicly funded universities, five of which sit in the global top 100. More than 60,000 non-local students study here, over 30,000 of them at the eight public universities, and from 2026–27 those universities may admit even more. You are joining a very well-worn path, even if it does not feel like it yet.
Why students pick Hong Kong
It runs in English
English is an official language and the medium of instruction at nearly every degree programme. Government forms, bank apps, hospital signage, MTR announcements: all bilingual. You can function fully from day one.
It is genuinely small
You can cross the whole territory in under 90 minutes. Campus to a hiking summit is often 40 minutes. Campus to a Michelin-starred dumpling counter is often 15.
It is a launchpad
Four hours by plane reaches Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Manila. Forty-eight minutes by train reaches Guangzhou. Weekend trips are a normal part of student life here.
The visa afterwards is unusually generous
The IANG visa lets non-local graduates stay 24 months with no job offer required. Few places in Asia are this open. See Station 14.
And the honest bits
- Space is expensive. Rent is the single biggest line in your budget and the one that shocks people most. A room, not a flat, a room, can run HK$6,000/month.
- Summer is brutal. May to September sits at 30–34°C with 80%+ humidity. You will change shirts. Typhoon season overlaps.
- The pace is real. People walk fast, escalators are a contact sport, and the city assumes you already know where you are going.
- Cantonese matters more than you think. Not for class, but for the wet market, the minibus, and the auntie at the noodle shop who will become your friend.
