Step by step
- 1Buy a regular Octopus card for your first days; you can use it at once.
- 2Wait for your student ID or proof of enrolment from your university.
- 3Download MTR Mobile and open the Student Travel Scheme section.
- 4Submit the application with the documents the app asks for.
- 5When approved, follow the app's steps to link your student status to your Octopus.
- 6Set a reminder to renew before 31 October each year.
Using a student fare after your status has lapsed, applying before your enrolment can be verified, and assuming the Airport Express is discounted.
A small administration fee may apply; check the current MTR page. Savings are often HK$150–400 a month for daily commuters.
